CONFIDENTIAL MARKETBiography
Afro Libio Basaldella was born in Udine, Italy, on 4 March 1912, and died in Zürich, Switzerland, on 24 July 1976. Trained in Florence and Venice, he emerged as one of the defining figures of post-war lyrical abstraction and Italian Informal art — a painter whose work bridged the gestural energies of mid-century modernism with a distinctly Mediterranean sensibility rooted in color and light.
Basaldella's international standing was confirmed in the late 1950s when he was invited to contribute to the UNESCO decoration project in Paris, producing Garden of Hope between 1957 and 1958. This large-scale work, associated with the Fontenoy Building and now held in the UNESCO Art Collection, placed him alongside fellow modern masters such as Matta and Appel, underscoring the reach of his reputation beyond Italy. His work entered major institutional collections on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice and the BNL BNP Paribas Collection in Rome, as well as the private Collezione Giuseppe Iannaccone.
The arc of Basaldella's career — from his Italian formation through his engagement with the American abstract expressionist milieu and back — has been the subject of sustained scholarly and gallery attention. A solo exhibition at the Galleria Internazionale d'Arte Moderna Cà Pesaro in Venice in 2022, titled Afro 1950–1970, dall'Italia all'America e ritorno, traced precisely this transatlantic dialogue. Tornabuoni Art mounted two concurrent solo presentations in 2018, one in London under the title Afro: Gesture, Line and Colour: The Makings of an Abstract Expressionist and a retrospective in Paris, while Galerie Jean-François Cazeau in Paris presented a survey of works spanning 1947 to 1975 in 2013. The scholarly record is anchored by three published catalogues raisonnés covering paintings, works on paper, and prints and lithographs, edited by M. Graziani and collaborators and published between 1997 and the mid-2000s, which together form the primary reference for the authentication and study of his output.
