Banksy

Banksy is the pseudonym of an English street artist, political activist, filmmaker, and author whose legal identity remains unconfirmed. Emerging from the Bristol graffiti scene in the 1990s, he developed a practice built on stencil and spray paint that moved rapidly from local walls to international prominence, transforming unauthorized public surfaces into sites of political argument, dark humor, and visual compression. His early Bristol work, including The Mild Mild West (1999), marked a transition from graffiti writing toward narrative stencil tableaux, while subsequent pieces such as Girl with Balloon (2002), Love Is in the Air / Flower Thrower (2003), and Napalm (2004) established the visual vocabulary — substitution, juxtaposition, and symbolic inversion — that would define his public language for decades.

Banksy's practice has consistently expanded beyond the street. In 2003, the solo exhibition Turf War brought his work into a warehouse setting in London, and between 2003 and 2005 he installed altered replicas within the Tate in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Musée du Louvre in Paris. The Armoured Dove (2005) used the West Bank barrier as both political statement and pictorial surface, while Banksy versus Bristol Museum (2009) demonstrated his capacity to occupy institutional space while sustaining institutional critique. Dismaland (2015), a large-scale temporary installation encompassing sculpture, painting, and architecture, represented the most comprehensive realization of his dystopian approach, addressing consumerism, migration, and political spectacle simultaneously. In 2017, The Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem integrated hospitality, colonial history, and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict into an inhabitable artwork. When Girl with Balloon was partially shredded through a concealed mechanism at auction in 2018, the resulting work — Love Is in the Bin — made institutional spectacle and the afterlife of images central to its meaning. Game Changer (2020), an oil painting donated for NHS fundraising, and the Ukraine murals of 2022 demonstrated the continuing political force of his interventions across shifting global contexts. Cut & Run (2023), presented as the first major exhibition organized by Banksy himself, offered unusual access to the mechanics of stencil production and the question of authorship that runs through his entire practice.

Beyond visual art, Banksy directed Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010), a documentary-style film whose unstable boundary between record and construction reflects his sustained interest in authenticity and authorship; it received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature in 2011. Authentication of eligible studio works — prints, paintings, and sculptures — is handled by Pest Control Office, established in 2008 as his official organization. His work is the subject of permanent displays at the MOCO Museum in Amsterdam and the Musée Banksy in Paris, and has been reviewed extensively in publications including The New York Times, The Week, and ArtCritic. Upcoming institutional presentations include exhibitions at the Petit Palais in Paris and Palazzo Fava in Bologna in 2026, a major survey at Arsenali Repubblicani in Pisa running into 2027, and the inclusion of recreated murals in the opening program of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles in 2026.
