REDISCOVERY CANDIDATEBiography
Daniel Spoerri was born Daniel Isaac Feinstein on 27 March 1930 in Galați, Romania. Following his family's flight to Switzerland in 1942, he grew up in Zürich, where he trained initially in dance and theatre before redirecting his energies toward visual art around 1959–1960. That transition proved decisive: in Paris in 1960, he became a co-founder of Nouveau Réalisme, the movement that sought to incorporate the textures and residues of everyday life directly into artistic practice. His contribution to that project was singular and immediately recognisable — the Tableaux pièges, or trap-pictures, first realised in 1959–1960. These assemblages fix the accidental arrangements of tableware, meal remnants, and ordinary objects to a board with adhesive, then display the whole vertically, so that what was once a horizontal surface — a table after a meal, a moment already past — becomes a permanent sculptural record of a contingent event. The method did not compose; it preserved, turning chance and social ritual into the substance of the work itself.
From this founding gesture, Spoerri's practice expanded outward into increasingly ambitious engagements with food, memory, and institutional form. His Musée sentimental de Paris, first presented at the Centre Pompidou in 1977, reframed the act of collecting as a subjective, even fetishistic enterprise, deliberately blurring the boundary between museum object, biographical relic, and artwork. A subsequent iteration, Le Musée sentimental de Bâle, brought the concept to the Museum für Gestaltung Basel in 1989, anchoring it in the specific cultural memory of a city. His serial project 365 Tische des Rest. extended the trap-picture logic across hundreds of dining-table assemblages, treating repetition and duration as artistic materials in their own right — a commitment crystallised in the 1997 work Fallenbild im Quadrat, documented in connection with the Kunsthaus Zürich. Eat Art, the practice of staging meals as live artistic events, ran as a parallel thread through his career, finding expression in projects such as L'Attrappe Tripes – 17 Bankette at the Maison de la Culture in Chalon-sur-Saône in 1980. Spoerri's work entered the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and his exhibitions ranged across institutions including the Kölnischer Kunstverein, the Sprengel Museum Hannover, the Musée du Jeu de Paume in Paris, and the Museum Jean Tinguely in Basel. Galerie Anne Barrault in Paris presented his work repeatedly between 2016 and 2026, and Levy Galerie has represented him as primary gallery since 2000.
Spoerri died in Vienna on 6 November 2024, in his ninety-fourth year. His death came shortly before what would have been his ninety-fifth birthday, and 2025 has seen a concentration of exhibitions responding to both that anniversary and his passing. A solo presentation, Zimtzauber. Alltag, Zufall, Kleben. Daniel Spoerri, opened at the Ausstellungshaus Spoerri in March 2025, accompanied by a full-colour catalogue. A memorial exhibition, Kein Freund von Stillstand, was mounted at Levy Galerie in Berlin the same year. The major retrospective Daniel Spoerri – Ich liebe Widersprüche, bringing together approximately 130 works spanning 1961 to 2023, opened at Deichtorhallen Hamburg / Sammlung Falckenberg in September 2025 and runs through April 2026, with a bilingual catalogue published by Snoeck Verlag. A further solo exhibition, Daniel Spoerri: Les choses de la vie, is scheduled at Galerie Anne Barrault in Paris from March to May 2026, with a publication by les presses du réel. The Daniel Spoerri Archive at the Swiss National Library preserves material relating to his artistic and professional activities, and authenticity of his work is assessed through provenance, exhibition and publication history, institutional documentation, and expert scholarly opinion.
