CONFIDENTIAL MARKETBiography
Elaine Sturtevant (born Elaine Frances Horan, 1924–2014) occupies a singular position in the history of postwar and contemporary art. A native of Lakewood, Ohio, she studied psychology at the University of Iowa and at Columbia University's Teachers College before relocating to New York in the 1950s, where she immersed herself in the city's avant-garde art world. In 1990 she moved to Paris, where she continued to live and work until her death.
Sturtevant built her practice around the deliberate, rigorous repetition of works by her contemporaries — a strategy that, far from constituting imitation, interrogated the very foundations of authorship, originality, and artistic identity. Because her works intentionally resemble those of other artists, the conceptual and historical framing of each piece is central to its attribution; authentication relies on documented provenance, exhibition history, archival records, estate documentation, and close comparison with her established working methods and materials. This complexity is inseparable from the meaning of the work itself. Her practice was recognized with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, one of the most prestigious honors in the international art world. Works by Sturtevant are held by the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and her practice has been the subject of institutional presentations including one at Passerelle Centre d'art contemporain in Brest.
Since her death, Sturtevant's estate has been managed by Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, with locations in Paris, London, and Salzburg, which has continued to present her work through a dedicated estate program. Solo exhibitions under this representation have included Reloaded at Thaddaeus Ropac, Paris, in 2014; Dialectic of Distance: Sturtevant Oldenburg Store at Thaddaeus Ropac in London and Paris in 2022; and ZIP ZAP! at Thaddaeus Ropac, Paris, in 2024. Critical engagement with her legacy has remained active, with coverage appearing in Artforum, Time Out, and ArtCritic, the latter publishing the essay 'Elaine Sturtevant and the enigma of the original' in 2026.
