Biography

Franz West was born in Vienna in 1947 and died there in 2012, spending his entire life in the city that shaped his sensibility and to which his reputation continues to return. He studied at the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien between 1977 and 1982, entering formal training relatively late and emerging with a practice that would prove difficult to categorize and impossible to ignore. His work cuts across sculpture, furniture, installation, and participatory object-making, consistently refusing the idea that art is something to be looked at from a respectful distance.

The body of work most closely identified with West is the Passstück — also called Adaptives — developed from the 1970s onward. Cast typically in plaster, these handheld and wearable sculptural objects were conceived not as finished things to be contemplated but as props to be picked up, worn, and physically negotiated by whoever encountered them. The premise was both simple and radical: sculpture becomes meaningful only when it activates the body and the psychology of the person holding it. This idea ran through West's practice for decades, surfacing in different materials and scales but never losing its insistence on contact. A later work, Sisyphos (2002), held at the Albertina Museum in Vienna and in the ESSL Collection, extends this engagement with the body into the register of classical myth, treating the figure of Sisyphus as a vehicle for thinking about sculpture as something perpetually in motion, perpetually unresolved.

West's exhibition history spans institutions across Europe and North America. Solo presentations took place at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Fondation Beyeler in Basel, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, and the Whitechapel Gallery in London, among many others. His outdoor sculptures occupied the Doris C. Freedman Plaza in New York on more than one occasion, and his furniture works — objects that sit at the boundary between functional design and sculptural proposition — were the subject of dedicated presentations at venues including the MAK in Vienna and Galerie Eva Presenhuber in Zurich. Gallery representation has included Gagosian across multiple locations, David Zwirner in New York and London, Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Galerie Gisela Capitain, and Galerie Bärbel Grässlin, among others.

In the years since his death, West's work has remained actively present in institutional programming. A 2023 exhibition at Galerie Eva Presenhuber, MELENCOLIA, was followed in 2025 by Die frühen Werke / Early Works, a reassessment of his formative period at the same gallery. Museum Brandhorst included his work in its 2025–2026 programming, and the Ringier Collection presented holdings of his work at the Langen Foundation in 2025. A major retrospective at ALBERTINA MODERN in Vienna is scheduled to open in November 2026, coinciding with the eightieth anniversary of his birth — a moment that has drawn renewed critical attention to the full arc of a practice that permanently altered how sculpture can ask something of the people who encounter it.
