Henry Moore

Henry Spencer Moore was born on 30 July 1898 in Castleford, a mining town in the West Riding of Yorkshire, the seventh of eight children in a miner's family. He trained at Leeds School of Art and subsequently at the Royal College of Art in London, before holding his first solo exhibition at the Warren Gallery, London, in 1928. That same year, his carved stone relief West Wind was installed on the London Underground headquarters building, signalling an early ambition to unite sculpture with architecture and public life. By 1929, works such as Reclining Figure — carved in elm wood using direct carving techniques and now held at Tate — had established the reclining human form as the central motif of his practice, synthesising influences from pre-Columbian and so-called 'primitive' art with a radically simplified modernist idiom. A retrospective at MoMA, New York, in 1946 and the International Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale in 1948 confirmed his standing as one of the defining sculptors of the twentieth century.

Moore's postwar decades were marked by an extraordinary range of public commissions and institutional recognition. Family Group (1948–49), installed at Barclay School, Stevenage, was his first major public commission in Britain, while Reclining Figure: Festival (1951), cast in bronze for the Festival of Britain, placed him at the heart of national cultural reconstruction. The UNESCO commission of 1957–58 — a monumental Reclining Figure that remains at the organisation's Paris headquarters — extended his reach to the international stage. Works such as King and Queen (1952–53), Draped Seated Woman (1957–58), Knife Edge Two Piece (1962–65), Locking Piece (1963–64), and Nuclear Energy (1964–66), installed at the University of Chicago, demonstrate the breadth of his formal and thematic ambitions across bronze, stone, and works on paper. His Shelter Drawings (1940–42) — executed in graphite, ink, and watercolour and held in major groups at Tate and the British Museum — stand as a defining visual record of civilian life during the Blitz, revealing a humanist sensibility that runs throughout his sculptural output. Among the honours he received were the CBE in 1951, the Légion d'honneur and the Companion of Honour in 1955, and the Order of Merit in 1963. He died on 31 August 1986 at his home in Perry Green, Much Hadham, Hertfordshire, aged 88.

Moore's work is held in collections spanning the Tate, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, MoMA, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Gallery of Ontario — which houses a dedicated Henry Moore Sculpture Centre — the Middelheim Sculpture Park in Antwerp, and the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris, among many others. The Henry Moore Foundation, which he established with his family in 1977 and which remains based at Perry Green, continues to steward his legacy, manage his former studios, and oversee his intellectual property. His primary gallery representation is held by Hauser & Wirth, which has presented major solo exhibitions of his work including Henry Moore: Late Large Forms at Hauser & Wirth Somerset in 2015, The Sculptor's Drawing in Florence in 2021, Henry Moore. The Sixties in London in 2022, Sharing From – Henry Moore and Henry Moore: The Body in Space at Hauser & Wirth Somerset in 2022 and 2024 respectively. Earlier institutional presentations include a landmark solo at the Tate Gallery, London, in 1968, and Henry Moore, L'atelier, sculptures et dessins at the Musée Rodin, Paris, in 2010. In 2026 — the fortieth anniversary of his death — Henry Moore: Monumental Nature at Kew Gardens brings his large-scale bronzes into dialogue with landscape on a scale described as the largest outdoor exhibition of his work ever staged.
