Karl Schmidt-Rottluff

Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884–1976) was one of the defining figures of German Expressionism, a painter and printmaker born in Rottluff, near Chemnitz, in Saxony. In 1905, while still a young man, he was among the co-founders of Die Brücke in Dresden — the radical artists' group whose collective ambition was to forge a new visual language for modern life. Schmidt-Rottluff's contribution to that project was unmistakable: a commitment to radical simplification of form, bold and unbroken contour, and color pushed to an intensity that bordered on the confrontational. These qualities remained hallmarks of his work across a long career that extended well into the postwar decades, as demonstrated by works such as City Scene / Stadtbild aus Soest (1959), in which his late style achieves a spare, concentrated power held in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Schmidt-Rottluff's standing was recognized during his lifetime through significant honors, including the Art Prize of the City of Berlin in 1952 and the Order Pour le Mérite. His work entered major institutional collections on both sides of the Atlantic, among them the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz — which holds approximately five hundred works spanning all periods of his practice — and the Brücke-Museum in Berlin, which houses the world's largest collection of his work through the custodianship of the Karl und Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Stiftung. That foundation, established in the artist's name and that of his wife Emy, remains the primary institutional authority for the documentation and authentication of his work. A provisional catalogue raisonné of his oil paintings was published by Will Grohmann in 1956, and a new, comprehensive catalogue raisonné of the paintings is currently being prepared under the foundation's auspices.

Schmidt-Rottluff's work continues to attract sustained scholarly and curatorial attention. In 2025, the Brücke-Museum mounted the solo exhibition The World Must Always Be Seen Anew – Painting by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, accompanied by active catalogue raisonné research that extends into 2026. That same year, Galerie Ludorff in Düsseldorf presented a dedicated solo exhibition of his work. Earlier exhibitions include a solo presentation of previously unknown works at the Ernst Barlach Haus in Hamburg in 2011, a thematic solo at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, and a group exhibition at Kunsthaus Dahlem in Berlin in 2021 that situated his collection of cultural works from colonial contexts within a broader critical framework. Works from named private collections — including the Collection Hermann Gerlinger in Würzburg and the Gabriele and Werner Merzbacher Collection, held on permanent loan at Kunsthaus Zürich — further attest to the depth of engagement his practice continues to inspire.
