ESTABLISHED MARKETBiography
Mark Bradford was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1961 and continues to live and work in the city where his practice took shape. He studied at the California Institute of the Arts, earning a BFA in 1995 and an MFA in 1997. Those years of formal training laid the groundwork for an approach to abstraction that is inseparable from the textures, languages, and social dynamics of urban life — particularly the commercial and community signage of Los Angeles neighborhoods that Bradford has long transformed into raw material.
Bradford works primarily at monumental scale, building up and excavating layered surfaces to produce what has been described as a form of social abstraction — painting that carries the residue of advertising, commerce, race, and place within its physical structure. Untitled (A–Z), a 2010 series of twenty-six works on paper derived from merchant posters, crystallizes this method: each sheet takes a single letter of the alphabet as its subject, converting the vernacular grammar of neighborhood commerce into formal abstraction. At the opposite extreme of scale, Pickett's Charge (2017), installed at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, spans more than four hundred linear feet across eight twelve-foot-tall canvases. The work reinterprets Paul Philippoteaux's nineteenth-century Gettysburg cyclorama, drawing Civil War memory into dialogue with ongoing questions of race, violence, and national identity through materially unstable, layered surfaces. Earlier works held in the records of the Museum of Modern Art — including Untitled #9 (2004), Giant (2007), and James Brown Is Dead (2007) — trace the development of Bradford's large-scale practice through the decade in which it gained sustained institutional recognition.
Bradford received the Bucksbaum Award in 2006 in connection with the Whitney Biennial, and his work has entered the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and Tate, London. He has held a residency at the Museo de Arte de Zapopan in Zapopan, Mexico. His primary gallery representation is through Hauser & Wirth, with whom he has presented solo exhibitions including Mark Bradford: New Works in Los Angeles in 2018, Cerberus in London in 2019, and Masses and Movements in Menorca in 2021; Mnuchin Gallery in New York holds a secondary representation. A major exhibition, 215: Jungle Jungle, opened at the Museum of Modern Art in May 2025 and runs through June 2026, while Hauser & Wirth presents further new work across the summer of 2025.
