REDISCOVERY CANDIDATEBiography
Mike Kelley (October 27, 1954–January 31, 2012) was an American artist born in Detroit, Michigan, whose practice became one of the most expansive and intellectually restless of his generation. After earning a BFA from the University of Michigan, he relocated to Los Angeles in the mid-1970s and completed an MFA at the California Institute of the Arts in 1978, remaining in Los Angeles for the rest of his life. Working fluidly across sculpture, drawing, painting, collage, assemblage, performance, photography, sound, and video, Kelley built a body of work that resisted easy categorization while maintaining a consistent preoccupation with memory, repression, popular culture, and the psychological residue of everyday American life.
Kelley's exhibition history spans more than four decades and an international range of institutions and galleries. His earliest documented solo presentations appeared in Los Angeles — at Riko Mizuno Gallery in 1981 and Rosamund Felsen Gallery in 1983 — followed by Monkey Island / Confusion at Metro Pictures, New York, in 1982. European galleries including Galerie Jablonka in Cologne, Galerie Ghislaine Hussenot in Paris, and Galerie Daniel Templon in Paris each hosted solo exhibitions across the 1980s through the early 2000s, while Hauser & Wirth in London presented Vice Anglais. Among his most sustained projects are Educational Complex Onwards, 1995–2008, Day is Done, Kandors, and Mobile Homestead — works that recurred in exhibition contexts across multiple years and venues. Deodorized Central Mass with Satellites remains on view at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. An early print, Jerry Meandering, made in 1976, has taken on renewed prominence as the title of a major retrospective exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, New York, running from November 2026 through January 2027.
Kelley's legacy has continued to grow substantially since his death. Ghost and Spirit, an exhibition addressing his early performance practice and broader artistic legacy, has traveled across multiple presentations, including at Moderna Museet in Stockholm and, as reviewed by The Arts Desk in 2024, at Tate Modern. Frieze published a substantial feature on the artist in 2025. The Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts, led by his former studio manager and administered through his estate, remains an active force in the contemporary art world, providing grants to organizations including Color Compton, the Vincent Price Art Museum, and ICA Los Angeles. Authenticity of works is established through documented provenance, exhibition and publication history, technical examination, and consultation with estate representatives and authorized gallery and foundation channels.
