Biography

Robert Mangold was born on October 12, 1937, in North Tonawanda, New York, and went on to study at the Cleveland Institute of Art from 1956 to 1959, before completing a BFA in 1961 and an MFA in 1963 at Yale University School of Art and Architecture. Over the decades that followed, he emerged as a major figure within the currents of Minimalism and post-Minimalist painting, developing a body of work distinguished by its rigorous attention to geometric form, the physical properties of the painted support, and the perceptual experience of the viewer.

Among his early paintings, Pink Area (1965) stands as a defining statement of his concerns. Executed in sprayed oil on Masonite on plywood, the work presents a square composition assembled from two vertical panels, with a rectangle removed from the lower-right corner. That deliberate absence — the withheld portion of the field — encapsulates Mangold's sustained inquiry into the relationship between a painting's geometric image, its material support, and the sensation of incompleteness as an active pictorial force. This line of investigation has continued to evolve across his career, finding expression in shaped canvases, works on paper, and the interplay of line and plane that has come to define his mature practice.

Mangold received a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1967 and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1969. He has been represented by Pace Gallery since 1991, and his exhibition history with the gallery spans multiple cities and decades: solo presentations have included Robert Mangold: Paintings 2017–2019 in New York in 2020, Robert Mangold: A Survey 1981–2008 in London in 2021, Robert Mangold: Plane Structures in New York in 2022, and Robert Mangold: Paintings and Works on Paper 1989–2022 in Seoul in 2023. Beyond Pace, his work has been shown at Galerie Greta Meert in Brussels, where a solo exhibition surveying works from 1967 to 2017 was presented in 2019, and he has appeared in group exhibitions including Tissue of Memory at Simon Lee Gallery, New York, in 2018, and Against Ornament, Against the Object at Gallery Baton, Seoul, in 2026. His most recent solo exhibition, Robert Mangold: Pentagons and Folded Space, opened at Pace Gallery, New York, in May 2025, accompanied by a catalogue with text by Dieter Schwarz, and drew coverage from the New York Times, the Brooklyn Rail, and Whitehot Magazine.
