ESTABLISHED MARKETBiography
Ahmed Mater was born in 1979 in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, and grew up near Abha before settling in Jeddah, where he continues to live and work. Trained and practiced as a physician, he developed a parallel career in art that draws on the analytical precision of medicine alongside a sustained engagement with Islamic ritual, urban transformation, surveillance, and the forces — scientific, political, and spiritual — that shape contemporary Saudi society. This dual formation gives his practice an unusual depth: his works tend to operate simultaneously as visual objects, conceptual propositions, and research documents.
Among his most recognized bodies of work is Magnetism, first exhibited in 2009, an installation that uses magnetic forces and metallic material to model the circular movement of pilgrims around the Kaaba as a phenomenon of physical attraction — binding Islamic ritual, mass movement, and scientific abstraction into a single image. Variations of the work have been shown at the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Arab American National Museum. The photographic series Disarm 1–10, made in 2013 and described by the Guggenheim in relation to the blue tonal character of surveillance footage, extended his inquiry toward the hyper-commercialized city and the technologies used to observe and control it. Other significant works include Antenna (White) (2010), which explores communication and visual power; Golden Hour (2011); Roadblock (2016); Lightning Land (2017); Ashab Al-Lal I (2022); and Saudi Futurism, a collaborative project with Armin Linke addressing photography, film, and installation around Saudi Arabia's imagined and constructed futures. The Guggenheim Museum, New York, holds work by Mater, and his practice is also represented in the Dalloul Art Foundation, the Nadour Collection, and A-Political, London.
Mater is represented by Galleria Continua, with locations in San Gimignano, Les Moulins, and Paris, and has a secondary relationship with Athr Gallery in Jeddah. His exhibition history spans institutions across multiple continents: solo presentations have included Ahmed Mater: Mecca Journeys at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, in 2017; Mitochondria: Powerhouses at Galleria Continua, San Gimignano, in 2017; Stand in The Pathway and See at Galleria Continua, Les Moulins, in 2018; Through the Spectrum at Athr Gallery, Jeddah, in 2018; Ahmed Mater: Ashab Al-Lal at The Architectural Heritage House, Al Muharraq, in 2023; and Ahmed Mater: Chronicles at Christie's, London, in 2024. Group exhibitions have brought his work to the Frac Centre-Val de Loire in Orléans, the Tropen Museum in Amsterdam, Frieze London, and Diriyah Art Futures in Riyadh, among others. In 2025, his solo exhibition Antenna opened at UCCA Edge in Shanghai, and he participates in the Islamic Arts Biennale at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah — two presentations that confirm the sustained international reach of a practice rooted firmly in the landscape, history, and rapid transformation of Saudi Arabia.
