Biography

Alighiero Fabrizio Boetti was born on 16 December 1940 in Turin, Italy, to a lawyer father and a violinist mother, and he died in Rome on 24 February 1994. His early formation took place in Turin during the mid-1960s, a moment when the city was becoming a crucible for Arte Povera, and his first solo exhibition was held at Christian Stein Gallery, Turin, in 1967. Works from that period — among them Catasta (1966), Rotolo (1966–1967), Pavimento (1967), and Niente da vedere niente da nascondere (1967) — reflect an engagement with industrial and nontraditional materials, modular arrangement, seriality, and the conceptual limits of the art object itself. These early propositions established the intellectual restlessness that would define everything that followed.

Boetti's mature practice is inseparable from the embroidered and woven works he developed from the 1970s onward, produced in collaboration with Afghan craftswomen and others, and sustained across two decades. Mappa, in which the flags of the world's nations replace conventional cartographic colour, transforms geopolitical flux into an ever-shifting visual record and makes collaborative authorship structurally central to the work. Ordine e disordine holds in tension the competing forces of rule and irregularity that run throughout his practice, while Arazzo and Cieli ad alta quota extend his investigation of language, colour, repetition, and the delegation of making. One of his final major works, Autoritratto (1993), introduces flowing water into the genre of self-portraiture, folding time, change, and self-erasure into a sculptural form. Across all of these, Boetti consistently questioned where authorship resides and what an artwork can be said to contain.

His legacy is maintained by the Fondazione Alighiero e Boetti, established in Italy on 10 September 2014 by his widow Caterina Raganelli Boetti and his son Giordano Boetti, and authentication of his work is supported by the official Archivio Alighiero Boetti alongside a four-volume catalogue raisonné covering 1961 to 1994. Exhibition history spans decades and continents: solo presentations at Edward Totah Gallery, London (1989), Galerie Amelio Brachot – Pièce Unique, Paris (1990), Sperone Westwater, New York (2002), and Tornabuoni Art, Paris (2021) trace a sustained international presence. Current and forthcoming exhibitions underscore the continuing vitality of his work: Alighiero e Boetti: Embellishing the Sky, curated by Elena Geuna, ran at Ben Brown Fine Arts, London, from March to May 2025, and Alighiero e Boetti: Ononimo opens at Ben Brown Fine Arts, Hong Kong, in November 2025. The major survey Tutto Boetti 1966–1993 opens at Magazzino Italian Art, Cold Spring, New York, in April 2026 and runs through April 2028, accompanied by a scholarly catalogue; a presentation at DIA Beacon, New York, begins in June 2026; and a solo exhibition at San Marco Art Centre, Venice, runs from May to November 2026.
