EXPANDING MARKETBiography
Salvo — born Salvatore Mangione on 22 May 1947 in Leonforte, Sicily — relocated with his family to Turin in 1956, and that northern Italian city remained the center of his life and practice until his death in 2015. Working across several decades, he developed a body of work that moved between conceptual inquiry and a deeply felt engagement with painting, light, and the constructed image of the artist.
His early practice is anchored by Autoritratto (1969), a photographic and self-referential work that placed questions of authorship, self-image, and the artist as a deliberately constructed subject at the heart of his thinking. From that conceptual starting point, Salvo's painting evolved into something increasingly luminous and atmospheric — an approach that drew sustained critical attention in 2024, when ArtCritic published a piece titled 'Salvo: the painter who reinvented light' and Die Welt ran the essay 'Seine Bilder sind fast zu schön, um klug zu sein,' both engaging seriously with his pictorial intelligence. More recently, The World of Interiors and Monopol explored his relationship to a particular vision of Italy in a 2025 feature, 'Salvo in Turin: Eine Reise durch ein vergangenes, magisches Italien.'
Salvo's institutional presence extends to the European Parliament Art Collection, and his gallery relationships have been wide-ranging and international. Dep Art Gallery in Milan documented solo exhibitions spanning from 2006 through 2026. Galerie Mehdi Chouakri in Berlin, Galerie Andrea Caratsch in Saint-Moritz, Sant'Andrea De Scaphis in Rome, and Galería Leyendecker in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have all presented his work. In the years since his death, Gladstone Gallery — with locations in New York and Seoul — and Sprüth Magers in Berlin and Los Angeles have become central to his posthumous representation, working in close collaboration with the Archivio Salvo and the Estate of Salvo, both of which remain active. Exhibitions include a 2020 solo at Gladstone Gallery New York; Salvo in Viaggio at Gladstone Gallery Seoul in 2025; Salvo: La città at Sprüth Magers Berlin in 2026; a group presentation alongside Andreas Schulze at Sprüth Magers Los Angeles in 2025; and a solo at Repetto Gallery, Lugano, running from September through December 2026.
