CONFIDENTIAL MARKETBiography
Martin Kippenberger (1953–1997) was born in Dortmund, Germany, and grew up in Essen before studying at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung in Kassel. He died in Vienna at the age of forty-four, leaving behind a body of work that has continued to generate sustained critical and institutional attention in the decades since. In 1997, the year of his death, he received the Käthe Kollwitz Prize, awarded by the Akademie der Künste, Berlin — a recognition that underscored the significance his practice had already achieved within the German and broader European art world.
Kippenberger's painting, sculpture, and related works are marked by a restless interrogation of pictorial convention, art-historical authority, and the instability of meaning within representation. Among the most discussed bodies of work is The Problem Perspective, a series developed principally in the 1990s that pursues questions of constructed vision, the failure of coherent pictorial order, and the limits of art-historical representation. This series is the subject of a major forthcoming exhibition, Martin Kippenberger: The Problem Perspective, scheduled at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, from September 20, 2026 through January 3, 2027. Works by the artist are held in the collection of Tate, London, as well as in the LBBW Collection, which includes paintings such as From the Misery to the Authority and Organische Architektur in Ungarn.
The artist's estate remains active in both scholarly and exhibition terms. A multi-volume catalogue raisonné of his paintings — with a third volume covering the years 1987 through 1992, published in 2017 — serves as the primary instrument for establishing the authenticity of his work. Galerie Gisela Capitain in Cologne holds the role of principal European estate gallery, while Skarstedt serves as the official U.S. representative of the estate, in collaboration with Capitain, with additional presences in Paris and London. Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin also maintains an active relationship with the estate. Recent solo exhibitions have included Heavy Mädel at Galerie Gisela Capitain in 2023, Heute Denken – Morgen Fertig at Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin that same year, Paintings 1984–1996 and De Lumière et Sentiments at Skarstedt in New York and Paris respectively, and The Late Paintings at Skarstedt, New York, in 2025. Coverage in publications including Frieze and Monopol has kept Kippenberger's practice in active critical discourse, reflecting an ongoing reassessment of his place within postwar and contemporary art history.
