Biography

Mimmo Paladino was born Domenico Paladino on 18 December 1948 in Paduli, near Benevento, in southern Italy, and grew up in Naples. He studied at the Liceo Artistico di Benevento from 1964 to 1968, laying the technical foundations for a practice that would come to encompass painting, sculpture, printmaking, and large-scale installation. His emergence as a central figure in the Italian Transavanguardia movement was marked by the presentation of that movement's work at the 1980 Venice Biennale — a moment that announced a generation's decisive turn away from Conceptualism toward a richly symbolic, image-laden figuration rooted in myth, ritual, and the deep strata of Mediterranean culture.

Paladino's visual language is built from archaic, enigmatic presences: masked or anonymous figures, animals, fragments of ancient script, and forms that seem to surface from some collective, pre-rational memory. A stone sculpture from 1985 depicting a male figure carrying a horn-shaped vessel distills this sensibility — the work reads simultaneously as archaeological artifact and contemporary object, collapsing time through sheer formal conviction. The 1986 painting Flayed extends this territory into darker registers, engaging themes of sacrifice and mortality with an archaizing directness that resists easy historical placement. A catalogue raisonné of his graphic work from 1974 to 2001, edited by Enzo Di Martino and published by Art of this Century in New York and Paris, documents the sustained importance of printmaking within his broader output. His 1999 installation I Dormienti, presented at The Roundhouse in London, demonstrated the monumental, immersive scale his practice can achieve.

Paladino's work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate in London, and the Vatican Museums, among other institutions. He holds the distinction of Honorary Royal Academician at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. His primary gallery representation is with MASSIMODECARLO across its Milan, London, Paris, and Hong Kong spaces, and recent solo exhibitions have taken place at those galleries as well as at Mixografia and Koplin Del Rio Gallery in Los Angeles. Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris and Salzburg hosted recurring solo presentations, including Mimmo Paladino: Sculptures in Paris in 2019 and New Paintings and Sculptures in Salzburg in 2021. Forthcoming institutional exhibitions include a solo presentation at Palazzo Citterio, home of the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, and Present into Past at the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame, scheduled for autumn 2026 — a title that captures, with some precision, the temporal logic at the heart of everything Paladino makes.
