Andreas Gursky

Andreas Gursky was born in Leipzig in 1955 into a family of commercial photographers, and relocated with his family to Düsseldorf in 1956–57 — a city that would shape the trajectory of his artistic formation. He studied at the Folkwangschule in Essen from 1977 to 1980, then enrolled at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he worked under Bernd Becher from 1981 to 1987, ultimately attaining the distinction of Becher's Meisterschüler. That lineage, rooted in the rigorous, conceptually driven photographic tradition of the Düsseldorf school, runs through every aspect of Gursky's practice: large-scale images that compress vast human environments — stock exchanges, factories, hotel atriums, concert crowds — into compositions of almost architectural precision, where the individual dissolves into pattern and the world becomes a kind of data.

Gursky's institutional and critical standing has been affirmed across decades of sustained recognition. In 1988 he received the Förderpreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen für junge Künstler from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. A decade later, 1998 brought two major international honours in the same year: the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography and the Citibank Private Bank Photography Prize. In 2001 the International Center of Photography in New York presented him with the Infinity Award for Art. In 2025, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia awarded him the Staatspreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, marking a full arc from early regional encouragement to the highest civic recognition his home state can confer.

His exhibition record reflects a practice that remains actively engaged with major institutions and galleries worldwide. A solo presentation at the Hayward Gallery in London in 2018 was followed by solo exhibitions at Gagosian in New York in 2022 and at White Cube in London the same year. In 2020 Sprüth Magers in Berlin hosted a solo show, and in 2025 — the year of Gursky's seventieth birthday — simultaneous solo presentations opened at Gagosian Paris, Sprüth Magers New York (under the title Inherited Images), and White Cube Mason's Yard in London, an unusual convergence that drew critical attention from publications including Die Zeit and The Brooklyn Rail. A solo exhibition at Kunsthal Rotterdam is scheduled to run from 27 March through 30 August 2026. His work is held in the collections of the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and he is represented by Sprüth Magers, Gagosian, and White Cube.
