Biography

Chu Teh-Chun (朱德群; 24 October 1920 – 26 March 2014) was a Chinese-born painter whose life traced one of the most remarkable arcs in twentieth-century art: from classical training in China to a position at the very heart of the French cultural establishment. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Hangzhou under the influential painter Lin Fengmian, and after 1949 taught in Taipei before making the decisive move to France in 1955. He became a French citizen in 1980, and in 1997 was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Institut de France — the first Chinese artist ever to receive that distinction.

His arrival in Paris in the mid-1950s coincided with a period of intense engagement with the city's postwar art world. He participated in the Salon Comparaison and Peintres Témoins de leur Temps in 1956, the year he also received the Silver Medal at the Paris Salon, and went on to show at La peinture d'aujourd'hui at the Palais Royal in 1957 and with the École de Paris at the Galerie Charpentier in 1960. His international reach expanded steadily: group exhibitions brought his work to Copenhagen, Milan, Jerusalem, Athens, Pittsburgh, Brussels, São Paulo — where the 10th Biennale devoted a dedicated room to his paintings in 1969 — and to venues across Germany, Luxembourg, and Italy throughout the 1970s. In 2001, France appointed him both Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur and Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques. A solo exhibition titled Nature Lives with Me was held at Waddington Custot in London in 2017, and the gallery remains among his primary representatives. Liang Gallery in Taipei and de Sarthe Gallery in Hong Kong have also presented his work.

The institutional stewardship of Chu Teh-Chun's legacy is overseen by the Fondation Chu Teh-Chun, established in Geneva in 2017 by his wife and son. The foundation serves as the authoritative body for certifying the artist's works, grounding its process in archival documentation and the artist's own records, and is currently preparing a catalogue raisonné. A solo exhibition of works on paper, Chu Teh-Chun – Œuvres sur papier, is scheduled at the Centre des arts of the International School of Geneva from 14 May to 27 June 2025, affirming the continued vitality of his presence in the art world more than a decade after his death.
