Serge Poliakoff

Serge Poliakoff was born on 8 January 1900 in Moscow and received his early training at the Moscow Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He left Russia in 1920 and settled in Paris in 1923–24, where he would spend the remainder of his life and build one of the most distinctive bodies of work to emerge from postwar European abstraction. By the time of his death on 12 October 1969, he had become a central figure of the new École de Paris and was closely associated with Tachisme — a generation of painters who pursued abstraction not as a system but as a deeply felt, almost meditative practice.

Poliakoff's paintings are immediately recognizable: interlocking planes of color, irregular in contour yet held in precise equilibrium, generating a sense of internal tension that critics have described as simultaneously silent and charged. His early works in public collections — among them Composition gris et noir (1951) and Jaune et noir (1952), both held at the Musée National d'Art Moderne – Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris — show his rapid consolidation of a mature abstract vocabulary through restrained, high-contrast palettes. By the mid-1950s, works such as Composition (1955), held at both the Centre Pompidou and the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, demonstrate the structural solidity and chromatic richness that would define his contribution to postwar painting. Into the 1960s, canvases like Composition rouge et bleue (1964–1965) — represented across the Centre Pompidou, the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, and the LaM in Villeneuve-d'Ascq — confirm his mastery of color relationships at their most expansive, while Tempera (1966) and Composition abstraite (1968), both at the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, reveal a late-career willingness to experiment with medium without ever abandoning the abstract language he had made his own. His work is also held in the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Poliakoff's critical standing has remained robust across decades. Hyperallergic has described him as an icon of unconventional abstraction and credited him with anticipating sixty years of subsequent painting; Apollo Magazine has devoted independent critical features to his late paintings and to what it called his "silent pictures" — a phrase that captures the hushed intensity many writers find in his canvases. In recent years his institutional and gallery presence has been equally sustained. A solo exhibition titled Silent Paintings was presented at Timothy Taylor Gallery in London in 2015, followed by a solo show at Cheim & Read in New York in 2016 — the artist's first solo presentation in that city in thirty-five years. Almine Rech in Paris has mounted successive solo exhibitions, including Image Divine in 2024 and Les étés de Poliakoff in 2025, and currently holds primary representation of his work. Galerie Lansberg presented a solo show in Paris in 2024, and a major exhibition drawing on the Alexis Poliakoff collection — which contributed nearly 150 works — is scheduled at the Musée Maillol in 2026. Notable private holdings include works from the Dr. Alfred Gunzenhauser Collection, now housed at Museum Gunzenhauser in Chemnitz. Authentication of Poliakoff's work draws on provenance, exhibition history, and scholarly literature including monographs by Michel Ragon and Jean Cassou, as well as catalogues produced by the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris for its retrospectives.
