Biography

Georges Mathieu (27 January 1921–10 June 2012) was one of the defining figures of postwar European abstraction — a painter, theorist, and member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts who became a principal voice of Abstraction Lyrique and a central presence within the broader current of Art Informel. Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer and largely self-taught, he began painting professionally in 1942, developing an approach to the canvas that privileged speed, gesture, and spontaneous mark-making as both aesthetic and philosophical commitments. Over the following decades he built a body of work that placed him at the forefront of mid-century avant-garde practice, earning him two of France's highest cultural distinctions: the Légion d'honneur and the rank of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, awarded by the French Ministry of Culture.

Mathieu's paintings entered the permanent collections of some of the world's most significant institutions, among them the Centre Pompidou and the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York — the last of which included his work in the 2020 group exhibition Degree Zero: Drawing at Midcentury. Corporate collections, including that of the Société Générale, have also long held his work. In the years since his death, sustained gallery investment has brought Mathieu's practice to new international audiences: Nahmad Contemporary presented Monumental Paintings in New York in 2019 and co-organized his first major U.S. survey with Perrotin in 2021; Perrotin mounted his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong that same year and continued with Georges Mathieu: 1960 to 1970 in Seoul in 2024. Galerie Templon showed his work in 2018, Applicat-Prazan brought a solo presentation to Paris+ par Art Basel in 2022, and Galerie Diane de Polignac staged Symphony in Blue in Paris in 2023. The breadth of these presentations — spanning New York, London, Milan, Hong Kong, and Seoul — reflects the genuinely global scope of renewed critical and institutional attention.

Today, Mathieu's estate is overseen by the active Comité Georges Mathieu, which authenticates works and safeguards the artist's moral rights, responding to inquiries from collectors, auction houses, and institutions in both French and English. Gallery representation extends across Paris, New York, and beyond, with Applicat-Prazan serving in an estate capacity alongside commercial partners including Perrotin and Nahmad Contemporary. Critical reassessment has accompanied this market activity: in 2021 both Artnet News and Galerie Magazine published substantial features examining the renewed interest in his work, and in 2025 a retrospective at the Monnaie de Paris drew fresh critical writing in France Culture and Critique d'art. Mathieu's reputation, long acknowledged within specialist circles, continues to be reestablished for the broader art world he helped shape.
