Biography

Claude Lalanne was born in Paris in 1925 and went on to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before establishing herself as one of the most distinctive sculptors and designers of the twentieth century. She lived and worked in Ury, France, where she developed a practice rooted in the close observation of the natural world — its flora, fauna, and organic forms — translating these into objects that occupied a singular space between fine art and functional design. Her work resists easy categorization, moving fluidly between sculpture, furniture, and decorative object while maintaining a consistent poetic sensibility.

Lalanne's public presence began in earnest in the early 1960s, when her work appeared at Galerie J. in Paris in 1964 under the title Zoophites — an exhibition that introduced the hybrid creature-objects that would become central to her reputation. Two years later, her tableware was presented at Galerie Alexandre Iolas in Paris, marking her first appearance at that gallery in 1966. Throughout her career she worked in close creative partnership with her husband François-Xavier Lalanne, and the two were recognized jointly when they received the Los Angeles Smart Festival award in 1989. Her sculpture Caroline, made in 1969, entered the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, cementing her standing within France's foremost institution for modern and contemporary art.

In the decades that followed, Lalanne's work was shown across Europe and internationally. Major presentations included Les Lalanne at the Château de Versailles and the Trianon in 2022, Les Lalanne in St. Moritz at Robilant + Voena in 2020, and Planète Lalanne at Ben Brown Fine Arts in Venice, which brought together more than 150 works by Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne. A solo exhibition at Galerie Mitterrand in Paris in 2018 offered a focused view of her individual practice, and Kasmin in New York — with which she maintained a long and recurring relationship — presented Les Lalanne: Zoophites, From the Collection of Caroline Hamisky Lalanne in 2024. Galerie Mitterrand, her primary representative, featured her work including an early Choupatte in its Design Miami program in 2026, and Ben Brown Fine Arts scheduled Les Lalanne: A Living Landscape in Hong Kong in connection with Art Basel Hong Kong that same year. Claude Lalanne died in 2019, leaving a body of work that continues to be exhibited, collected, and closely studied.
