Pierre Tal Coat

Pierre Tal Coat was born Pierre Louis Jacob on 12 December 1905 in Clohars-Carnoët, in the Finistère department of Brittany. Self-taught as a painter, printmaker, and sculptor, he adopted the Breton pseudonym Tal Coat around 1926–1927, and it was under that name that he would build one of the most distinctive careers in twentieth-century French art. He died on 11–12 June 1985 at Saint-Pierre-de-Bailleul, in Normandy.

Tal Coat's exhibition history spans nearly six decades and reaches across Europe and North America. His earliest recorded solo presentations took place at Galerie Fabre et Cie in Paris in 1926 and 1929, and by 1938 his work had crossed the Atlantic to the Julien Levy Gallery in New York. In 1941 he appeared in the landmark group exhibition Vingt jeunes peintres de tradition française at Galerie Braun, Paris, and in 1947 his painting was shown alongside that of Dubuffet, Fautrier, and Hartung in Painting in France 1939–1946 at the Whitney Museum in New York. A solo at Galerie de France in Paris followed in 1950, and in 1954 he began his long association with Galerie Maeght, Paris, which would represent him until his death in 1985. Retrospectives at the Musée de Metz in 1974, the Musée Royal d'Ueno in Tokyo in 1975, and the Grand Palais in Paris in 1976 confirmed his standing as a central figure of postwar French painting. In 1985, the year of his death, retrospectives were held at both the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Quimper and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. A particularly significant body of work from his years in Provence — roughly 1940 to 1956 — is held at the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence; it was during this period that his painting moved decisively from figurative and expressionist beginnings toward a non-figurative language built from traces, stones, and paths rather than depicted scenery. In 1963 he created a mosaic for the entrance wall of the Fondation Marguerite et Aimé Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a work that remains in the foundation's collection.

Since 2019, Galerie Christophe Gaillard in Paris has held exclusive representation of the estate, in agreement with the artist's daughter and successor Pierrette Demolon-Tal Coat, and has presented several solo exhibitions including Pierre Tal Coat Peintre premier in 2022 and Nature sensible in 2025. Galerie Berthet-Aittouarès, a long-standing advocate of his work, has organised at least eight solo exhibitions, most recently Pierre Tal-Coat Surgissement de la peinture in both Paris and Aix-en-Provence. The Centre Pierre Tal Coat, established in 2010 at the Domaine de Kerguéhennec, serves as a research and presentation centre and has published an online catalogue raisonné of his engraved work and illustrated books, compiled by Françoise Simecek and Rainer Michael Mason. A catalogue raisonné of the painted oeuvre is being prepared by Xavier Demolon, the artist's grandson, with the support of the Association Les Amis de Pierre Tal Coat, founded in October 2016. In Hennebont, the Artothèque-Galerie Pierre Tal-Coat, created in 1999, bears his name and manages a collection of approximately 1,200 works dedicated to the diffusion of contemporary art.
