Biography

Fahrelnissa Zeid (6 December 1901 – 5 September 1991) was born Fahrünissa Şakir on Büyükada, Istanbul, into an influential Ottoman family at a moment when the empire itself stood on the threshold of transformation. Her formal training began at the Academy of Fine Arts for Women in Istanbul and continued at the Académie Ranson in Paris, grounding her in both Eastern and Western artistic traditions. In 1934 she married Prince Zeid bin Hussein of the Iraqi Hashemite royal family, a union that placed her at the intersection of diplomatic and cultural life across Europe and the Middle East. She lived and exhibited internationally throughout her career before settling in Amman, Jordan, where she remained until her death.

Zeid's painting moved through several distinct phases, each marked by an uncompromising commitment to visual intensity. Resolved Problems (1948) signals her postwar turn toward geometric abstraction, its large-scale, structurally intricate composition announcing an ambition that would define the following decade. My Hell (1951) exemplifies the mature abstract work for which she is most celebrated — densely layered line-work, saturated colour, and an emotional charge that resists easy categorisation. Towards a Sky (1953) extends this immersive language and has since become emblematic of her legacy, lending its title to a 2022 exhibition at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation dedicated to her work. Later, Someone from the Past (1980) marks a deliberate return to figuration and portraiture, rounding out a body of work that spans abstraction and the human image with equal conviction.

Her work is held in the permanent collections of Tate Modern in London, Istanbul Modern, and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, as well as in the Barjeel Art Foundation, the Khalid Shoman Foundation–Darat al Funun, the Huma Kabakcı Collection, and the Papko Art Collection. Dirimart, with spaces in Istanbul and London, serves as her primary gallery representation, having presented solo exhibitions including Ode to Passion (Istanbul, 2018), A Three-Character Play (Istanbul, 2020), Portraits (Istanbul, 2021), and the forthcoming Fahrelnissa Zeid: Immersion (London, 2026). A landmark solo exhibition at Tate Modern further consolidated her standing within the international canon. In recent years, features in Frieze and Hyperallergic, alongside coverage in The Art Newspaper France and a 2026 essay published by the Fiker Institute, reflect sustained critical attention to her life and practice. The Estate of Fahrelnissa Zeid remains active, locating, restoring, and cataloguing works and archival materials — correspondence, photographs, exhibition brochures, and reviews — to support the ongoing study and attribution of her output.
