Biography

Marwan Kassab-Bachi — known in the art world simply as Marwan — was born in Damascus, Syria, in 1934 to a Syrian father and a Lebanese mother. After studying Arabic literature at Damascus University, he relocated to Berlin, where he would remain for nearly six decades until his death in 2016. That sustained displacement, from the Arab world to postwar Germany, became the animating condition of his art: a lifelong negotiation between rootedness and exile, between the interior life of the individual and the broader forces of history and geography that shape it.

Marwan's practice centered on the human face as a site of psychological and almost geological inquiry. The body of work associated with Topographies of the Soul — paintings and works on paper connected to a 2014–2015 exhibition at Maraya Art Center and Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah — crystallizes what critics have called his "facial landscape" concept, in which portraiture dissolves into something closer to terrain: layered, eroded, and charged with interior pressure. This approach had deep roots. The group of paintings and works on paper gathered under Early Works 1962–1972 documents the formative decade in which Marwan first developed the figurative and psychological language that would sustain his entire mature practice. Across both early and late work, the face is never merely a likeness — it is a field of forces, a record of time and feeling rendered in dense, expressive paint.

Recognition of Marwan's contribution came from multiple directions. He received the Karl Hofer Prize in 1966, the Fred Thieler Prize for Painting in 2002, and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2005 — the last awarded in acknowledgment of both his artistic achievement and his social engagement. His work entered the permanent collection of the Berlinische Galerie in Berlin, and he was represented throughout his career and posthumously by Sfeir-Semler Gallery, with spaces in Hamburg and Beirut. Solo exhibitions at Sfeir-Semler Hamburg — including Works on Paper: 1968–2014 in 2018 and Marwan — Works from 1964 to 2008 in 2024 — have continued to bring sustained attention to different dimensions of his output. A solo presentation at Meem Gallery in Dubai in 2015 and a posthumous exhibition at Galerie Michael Haas in Berlin in 2018 further extended his international reach.

The years since his death have seen Marwan's reputation consolidate significantly. In 2025 and 2026, Christie's in London hosted Marwan: A Soul in Exile, a major posthumous retrospective presenting approximately 160 paintings and works on paper spanning 1953 to 2014 — one of the most comprehensive surveys of his work ever assembled. An exhibition at Sfeir-Semler Gallery running from October 2025 through January 2026 accompanied this renewed critical attention, which has also generated substantial press coverage in publications including Il Giornale dell'Arte and MutualArt. Marwan's art, long admired within specialist circles, is increasingly understood as one of the most searching and singular bodies of figurative painting to emerge from the twentieth century.
