Agus Suwage

Agus Suwage — born Oei Hok Sioe on 14 April 1959 in Purworejo, Central Java, Indonesia — is one of the most distinctive voices to emerge from the Indonesian contemporary art scene. Raised in a Chinese-Indonesian family, he studied graphic design at the Bandung Institute of Technology from 1979 to 1986 and subsequently worked as a graphic designer in Jakarta before relocating to Yogyakarta in 1999 to commit fully to his practice as an artist. That transition marked the beginning of a sustained and wide-ranging body of work that has drawn international critical attention for its layered engagement with identity, duality, and the instability of selfhood.

Suwage's practice resists easy categorisation. His 2003 work Yin Yang — acrylic on canvas incorporating a motor and iron — exemplifies his willingness to push beyond the boundaries of conventional painting, transforming a picture-plane format into a mechanically activated object that hovers between painting and installation. The work encapsulates a recurring preoccupation in his art: the tension between opposites, the refusal of fixed categories, and the productive unease that arises when familiar forms are made strange. ArtReview, writing in 2022, characterised his approach through the lens of a deadly serious irony, a phrase that captures the way Suwage deploys wit and theatricality in the service of genuinely searching inquiry.

His exhibition history spans multiple continents and more than two decades. Solo presentations have taken place at Tyler Rollins Fine Art in New York in 2010 and 2013, at ARNDT in Berlin in 2013, at Avanthay Contemporary in Zurich in 2008, and at Valentine Willie Fine Art in Kuala Lumpur in 2004, among others. More recently, solo exhibitions at ROH in Jakarta in 2024 and at Nadi Gallery in Jakarta in 2025 — titled Ziggurat and Fragments of Suwage respectively — confirm the continued vitality of his practice. A solo presentation titled Scenic World was held at Mizuma Gallery in Singapore in 2023, and a group exhibition, Faces & Figures, is scheduled at the same gallery in 2026. Works by Suwage are held in the collections of the Singapore Art Museum, the National Gallery of Indonesia in Jakarta, and the Toledo Museum of Art.
