CONFIDENTIAL MARKETBiography
Anas Albraehe was born in Soueida, Syria, in 1991 and completed a bachelor's degree in Painting and Drawing at Damascus University of Fine Arts in 2014. Working primarily in oil on canvas, he has built a practice centered on themes of dream, memory, identity, and displacement — a visual language rooted in his Syrian origins and shaped by the experience of exile and migration that has defined so much of his generation.
Albraehe's earliest identified painting, Manal (2014), a modestly scaled oil on canvas, gave its name to his first documented solo exhibition, presented in Amman at Wadi Finan Art Gallery in 2017. That work, along with Dream Catchers. Autoportrait (2020), is now held at the Institut du monde arabe in Paris, both donated in 2021 by collectors Claude and France Lemand — a significant institutional anchoring for an artist still in the early stages of his international career. The Dream Catchers series, developed around 2020, represents the core of his mature practice: large-format canvases such as Dream Catchers 2 (150 × 150 cm) and Dream Catchers 3 (130 × 162 cm) demonstrate the scale and sustained focus with which he pursues this body of work, while Future's Guards (130 × 195 cm), also from 2020, extends his socially and psychologically inflected imagery into an expansive horizontal format.
His exhibition record spans Beirut, Amman, New York, and Paris. Solo presentations at Agial Art Gallery in Beirut — The Dream Catcher in 2018 and Mother Earth in 2019 — were followed by The Dreamer at Anita Rogers Gallery in New York in 2022 and, the same year, Bab Alhawa: Gate of the Wind: Gate of Exile at Galerie Claude Lemand in Paris, a title that speaks directly to the themes of threshold and uprooting that run through his work. In 2024, he participated in the group exhibition Syria. Lights and Darkness at Galerie Claude Lemand. In 2021, Albraehe was named a laureate of the Institut français residency programme and held a residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, during which he developed his Mother Earth series. He is currently represented by Anita Rogers Gallery in New York, with additional gallery relationships in Beirut and Paris.
