Barkley L. Hendricks

Barkley L. Hendricks (April 16, 1945, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – April 18, 2017, New London, Connecticut) occupies a singular position in the history of American portraiture. Trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and holding both a bachelor's and a master's degree in fine arts from Yale University, Hendricks spent nearly four decades teaching at Connecticut College, from 1972 until 2010, while developing a body of work that fundamentally recast the conventions of Western portraiture around the authority and individuality of Black subjects. His paintings fuse the monumental scale and frontal gravitas of European Old Master tradition with the specific textures of contemporary urban life — clothing, posture, attitude — producing figures who command the picture plane entirely on their own terms.

Two works from 1969 announce the ambition of this project with particular clarity. Lawdy Mama, now held by the Studio Museum in Harlem, presents a Black subject at Old Master scale and with a frontality that transforms the sitter into something close to an icon — self-possessed, unhurried, and entirely beyond the reach of any external gaze that might diminish her. Miss T, in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, belongs to the same foundational moment, establishing the sharply individualized approach to likeness that would define Hendricks's practice across subsequent decades. Sisters (Susan and Toni) from 1977 extends this inquiry into paired figures, exploring how social identity, dress, and pose operate within the formal structures of portraiture when the subjects are granted full pictorial authority.

Hendricks's work is held by an exceptional range of institutions, including the National Gallery of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Tate London, and the Frick Collection, where his portraits were the subject of a dedicated exhibition reviewed in The Brooklyn Rail in 2024. The traveling retrospective Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool, which originated at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University in 2008 and traveled to the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts among other venues, brought sustained critical attention to the full arc of his achievement. His estate is represented by Jack Shainman Gallery in New York, where solo exhibitions including In the Paint in 2020 and Myself When I Am Real in 2023 have continued to shape his legacy. In 2026, Marian Goodman Gallery in Paris presented Barkley L. Hendricks: All is Portraiture, his first solo exhibition in Europe, reviewed by Le Monde as the work of a portraitist of uncompromising conviction. Forthcoming institutional engagement includes Everything Now All At Once at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, opening in August 2025 and running through July 2026.
