Biography

Eric Fischl was born on March 9, 1948, in New York City, and came of age in the suburban landscapes of Long Island and Phoenix, Arizona — environments that would become the psychological terrain of his most celebrated work. He received a B.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts in 1972, and by the late 1970s and early 1980s had established himself as one of the most compelling figurative painters of his generation. Works such as Sleepwalker (1979) and Bad Boy (1981) announced a distinctive sensibility: ordinary domestic settings rendered with a voyeuristic precision that exposed the anxieties, desires, and unspoken tensions simmering beneath the surface of middle-class American life. A Visit To / The Visit (1981) extended this approach, using cropped figures and interrupted action to transform the suburban interior into a stage for unresolved psychological drama. These early paintings are widely regarded as central to the revival of psychologically charged narrative figuration during that decade.

Fischl's practice has expanded considerably over the decades to encompass sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and photography. The Burial of the Count of Orgaz (1994) reflects a sustained engagement with art-historical precedent, while the Krefeld Project (2008), presented at Museum Haus Esters in Krefeld, Germany, marked a significant evolution toward installation and historically layered environments, exploring the relationship between private memory and public space. His bronze sculpture Tumbling Woman (2009–2010) represents another dimension of this development — a response to the bodily imagery of the September 11 attacks that generated considerable debate about the possibilities and limits of representing collective trauma through a single figure. Fischl was also included in the exhibition 'Rendering the Unthinkable: Artists Respond to 9/11' at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York in 2016.

His work is held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Musée Beaubourg in Paris. Solo exhibitions have been mounted at institutions including the Albertina in Vienna, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, and the Kestnergesellschaft in Hannover, alongside a sustained exhibition history with Skarstedt, his primary gallery, across New York, London, and Paris. Recent solo presentations at Skarstedt include Rift/Raft (2016), Late America (2017), Towards the End of an Astonishing Beauty: An Elegy to Sag Harbor, and Thus America (2022), Hotel Stories (2024), and Eric Fischl: Couples in Paris in 2025. A major survey exhibition, Eric Fischl: Stories Told — focusing on large-scale paintings that examine suburban America, social mythology, and narrative memory — opened at the Phoenix Art Museum in November 2025 and runs through June 2026.
