DORMANT MARKETBiography
Jean-Michel Basquiat was born on December 22, 1960, in Brooklyn, New York, to a Haitian American father and a Puerto Rican American mother of Spanish descent. Raised speaking English, Spanish, and French, he came of age without formal academic or institutional art training, instead finding his earliest creative voice on the streets of lower Manhattan under the tag SAMO©. From that underground beginning, he ascended with remarkable speed to international prominence in the early 1980s, becoming one of the most consequential American artists of the twentieth century before his death in his Manhattan studio on August 12, 1988, at the age of twenty-seven.
Basquiat's practice drew on an extraordinarily wide range of references — anatomy, history, language, race, and popular culture — fused through a visual language of raw figuration, layered text, and charged symbol-making. The year 1982 stands as a particular watershed: works from that period, including the acrylic, oilstick, and spray-paint canvas Untitled (1982), now held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, crystallized the skull imagery, dense written passages, and urgent figuration that would define his international reputation. Works such as Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump, Flexible, Eroica II, and Untitled (History of the Black People) are held in distinguished private foundations and collections, among them the Brant Foundation, the Broad, the Schorr Family Collection, the Rubell Museum, and the Daros Collection — a breadth of institutional stewardship that reflects the sustained seriousness with which his legacy is regarded.
The Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat remains active, working to preserve and exhibit his art and to maintain accurate scholarship around his life and work. Solo exhibitions in recent years have been presented at Gagosian in Paris and Hauser & Wirth in St. Moritz, both in 2024, as well as a 2025 exhibition at The Intermission Gallery in Piraeus — the first presentation of his work in Greece. The coming years bring an exceptional concentration of major institutional attention: Signs: Connecting Past and Future opens at Dongdaemun Design Plaza Museum in Seoul in September 2025; Basquiat: Headstrong, focused on drawings and oilstick works centered on the human head, is presented at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk from January to May 2026; Basquiat: Figures, Signs, Symbols, drawn from the Kenneth C. Griffin collection, opens at Pérez Art Museum Miami in June 2026; a major exhibition follows at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in the autumn of 2026; and Basquiat. In Italian is presented at Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, from September 2027 into early 2028. Across continents and institutions, the sustained engagement with Basquiat's work confirms a legacy that continues to expand in reach and critical depth.
