ACTIVE MARKETBiography
Walton Ford was born in 1960 in Larchmont, New York, and studied film at the Rhode Island School of Design before committing entirely to painting. He lives and works in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, and over the course of his career has developed one of the most distinctive and intellectually layered bodies of work in contemporary American art — large-scale watercolors and paintings in which animals serve as the primary vehicles for historical, political, and literary inquiry.
Ford's practice draws deeply on the visual conventions of natural-history illustration, but redirects them toward subjects charged with moral and cultural ambiguity. Works such as La Historia Me Absolverá (1999), Swadeshi-cide (1998), and Compromised (2003) demonstrate how consistently he has woven political language and historical reference into compositions that, at first glance, recall the taxonomic imagery of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Earlier works, including Six Fingers (1989), document the emergence of this engagement with animal imagery, while pieces like Nila (2000), Benjamin's Emblem (2000), and Tale of Johnny Nutkin (2001) show the range of literary and emblematic sources he draws upon. Visitation (2004) and It Makes Me Think of that Awful Day on the Island (2011) extend this vocabulary further, using animal encounters as a lens through which memory, narrative, and historical trauma are examined. Several of these works are recorded by the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Ford's work is also held in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. The Morgan Library & Museum holds sixty-three studies donated by the artist.
Ford is represented by Gagosian and by Galerie Max Hetzler, which maintains spaces in Berlin, Paris, and London. His solo exhibition history spans institutions and galleries across multiple continents: a solo presentation at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris in 2015, Calafia at Gagosian in Beverly Hills in 2017, Aquarelle at Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin in 2021, a solo exhibition at Gagosian New York in 2022, A Very Rare Sight at Galerie Max Hetzler in Paris in 2023, and Tutto at Gagosian New York in 2025. His work has also appeared at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2022 and 2023. Coverage of his practice has appeared in publications including Vogue, Frieze, and Air Mail. Looking ahead, An Orbed Drop of Light is scheduled to open at Galerie Max Hetzler in London in 2026, with a further iteration of the exhibition planned at Galerie Max Hetzler later that year.
