Biography

Jenny Saville was born in Cambridge, England, on 7 May 1970. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art between 1988 and 1992, and subsequently held a scholarship at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. She lives and works in Oxford, England, and has been represented by Gagosian across its New York, London, and Paris galleries throughout her career. In 2007 she was elected a Royal Academician by the Royal Academy of Arts, London.

Saville emerged as a significant presence in British painting when her work appeared in the Young British Artists III exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, London, in 1994. Her early paintings established the terms that would define her practice: the human body rendered at monumental scale, treated as a surface simultaneously physical, psychological, and political. Propped, completed in 1992, announced these concerns with particular force, presenting an inverted self-portrait in which reflected text inscribed across the canvas challenged idealized conventions of the female nude. Plan, from 1993, extended this inquiry by mapping the body as a surveyed and materially unstable terrain, drawing on the visual language of medical and surgical imagery. By the close of the decade, works such as Fulcrum and Matrix, both from 1999, had moved beyond the isolated figure toward compositions of compressed, interdependent bodies and an explicit engagement with gender ambiguity and bodily transformation. Her first solo exhibition at Gagosian New York, Territories, also opened in 1999, followed by Migrants in 2003. Stare, completed between 2004 and 2005, shifted focus toward the face and gaze as sites of confrontation, while Hyphen in 2013 explored overlapping figures and the relational construction of identity. Knead, from 2022, reflects her continued synthesis of figuration, abstraction, and art-historical reference. Works by Saville are held in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, and the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach. In 2006 she completed a commissioned three-painting series for the private collector Carlo Bilotti, installed in his chapel at the Museo Carlo Bilotti in Rome.

Saville's exhibition history spans major institutions across Europe and North America. Solo presentations at Gagosian have included Continuum in London in 2011, Oxyrynchus in London in 2014, Erota in London in 2016, Ancestors in London in 2018, Elpis in New York in 2020, Latent in Paris in 2022, and Ekkyklema in London in 2023. Earlier institutional solos were held at the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea in Rome in 2005 and at Modern Art, Oxford, in 2012. In 2025, her work is the subject of simultaneous major solo exhibitions: Jenny Saville: Gaze at the Albertina, Vienna, running from 21 March to 29 June, and Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting at the National Portrait Gallery, London, from 20 June to 7 September, before travelling to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth from 12 October 2025 to 18 January 2026. A further solo exhibition at Ca' Pesaro, Venice, is scheduled from 28 March to 22 November 2026.
