Biography

Louise Lawler was born in 1947 in Bronxville, New York, and graduated from Cornell University in 1969. She lives and works in New York, and over the course of her career has developed a body of work rooted in photography that interrogates the conditions under which art is displayed, owned, and assigned meaning. Her practice turns the camera not toward the creation of autonomous images but toward the systems that frame art objects — the walls, rooms, and social arrangements that determine how a work is seen and what it is understood to signify.

Two early photographs illuminate the central concerns that have defined her approach. Arrangements of Pictures, made in 1982, examines how artworks are transformed by the logic of display — how interiors, ownership, and the act of arrangement reshape what a work communicates. Pollock and Tureen, from 1984, places a canonical modernist painting in proximity to domestic objects, exposing the way context mediates claims of artistic prestige and cultural authority. Together, these works established Lawler as a rigorous and quietly subversive voice in the critical discourse around representation and institutional power.

Lawler's institutional presence is substantial. Her work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Tate in London. She has been represented historically by Metro Pictures in New York and Yvon Lambert Gallery in Paris, and is currently represented primarily by Sprüth Magers, with additional gallery relationships at Marian Goodman Gallery in Paris, Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, and Skarstedt in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include NOT ENOUGH TO SEE at Marian Goodman Gallery, Paris, in 2022; a solo presentation at the Grand Arles Express, Avignon, in 2023, presented by Sprüth Magers; and Going Through the Motions at Sprüth Magers, Los Angeles, in 2025. She also appeared in the group exhibition Borderline at Paula Cooper Gallery, New York, in 2025. Her work has been covered in publications including Artforum and Frieze, and she has forthcoming presentations at the Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection in Paris, Museum Brandhorst in Munich, and through Sprüth Magers in both London and Los Angeles.
