Nicolas de Crécy

Nicolas de Crécy was born on 29 September 1966 in Lyon, France, and trained at the École Supérieure de l'Image in Angoulême, graduating in 1987. Before establishing himself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary French comics, he worked in animation at Walt Disney Studios in Montreuil. He lives and works in Paris.

De Crécy's debut, Foligatto (1991), illustrated from a script by Alexios Tjoyas and published by Les Humanoïdes Associés, announced a baroque, surrealist visual sensibility that immediately attracted critical attention and multiple prizes. He consolidated his reputation as a complete author with Le Bibendum céleste (1994), the opening volume of an experimental trilogy written and drawn entirely in direct colour, celebrated for its painterly surfaces, intricate compositions, and hallucinatory urban imagery. Collaboration proved equally generative: the second volume of Léon la came, co-created with Sylvain Chomet, received the Alph'Art Prize for Best Album at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 1998. His formal ambitions continued to expand across subsequent works — Prosopopus (2002) dispensed with text altogether, constructing its narrative purely through images, while Journal d'un fantôme (2008) turned inward as a meta-narrative on drawing and authorship. Période glaciaire, co-published by the Musée du Louvre and Futuropolis, brought his speculative imagination into direct dialogue with the museum's collections; its original drawings were exhibited at the Louvre in 2009, and the work earned widespread critical recognition. Works such as Salvatore and Monsieur Fruit extended his range into absurdist serial humour and rapid expressive line, demonstrating a restlessness with any single mode.

A residency at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto in 2008 deepened his engagement with travel and place, threads that surface in Visa Transit and the autobiographical dimensions of CAMMINI / Visa Transit. His exhibition history spans Paris, Brussels, New York, and Corsica, with solo presentations at Galerie Barbier and Galerie Martel in Paris, Huberty & Breyne in Brussels, and Philippe Labaune Gallery in New York. A major retrospective, Étranges cités, presented approximately 150 works at the Musée Thomas-Henry in Cherbourg in 2023 and was covered by Le Monde, Le Figaro, and France Inter, with critics examining his evolution from bande dessinée into the broader field of visual art. His work enters 2025 and 2026 with continued momentum: Montagnes (Randonnée picturale) opened at Huberty & Breyne in Brussels in 2025, and Tokyo, ville cubiste is presented at Galerie Barbier in conjunction with Drawing Now Paris in 2026. His work is held in the collection of the Centre Pompidou, Paris. He is represented primarily by Galerie Barbier in Paris and Huberty & Breyne in Brussels, with secondary representation by Philippe Labaune Gallery in New York.
