DORMANT MARKETBiography
Omar El-Nagdi (28 November 1931–2019) was one of Egypt's most significant painters of the twentieth century, born in Cairo's Bab el-Sharia district and trained at Cairo's Faculty of Fine Arts, where he graduated in 1953. He subsequently pursued advanced studies in Italy and Russia, an international formation that shaped his synthesis of Egyptian historical and popular imagery with Cubist, Expressionist, and abstract pictorial languages. Working at monumental scale, El-Nagdi developed a visual vocabulary that drew on the deep well of pharaonic and folk tradition while remaining in active dialogue with the broader currents of modern painting.
His standing within the Arab art world was recognized early through successive prizes at the Alexandria Biennale in 1966, 1968, and 1974. Over the following decades his exhibition presence extended well beyond Egypt: he showed repeatedly at Galerie Danielle Bourdette in Honfleur and at Galerie Eric Baudet in Le Havre throughout the 1990s and into the early 2000s, and participated in a group exhibition at Galerie F.H. Forum in Paris in 2000. In Cairo, Al Masar Gallery for Contemporary Art served as his primary institutional home during the later years of his career, presenting the solo exhibitions Egyptianism in 2009, Impulsive Expressionism in 2010, and Impulsive Expressionism II in 2013. Works by El-Nagdi have entered the collection of the Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah, affirming his place within the canon of modern Arab art.
Among the works most closely identified with his mature practice is Sarajevo, a large triptych painted in 1992 in response to the violence and ethnic cleansing of the Bosnian War. First shown that year at Al-Ahram Gallery in Cairo, the painting stands as a testament to El-Nagdi's conviction that art could bear witness to historical trauma. The work has come to be regarded as a touchstone of his output. El-Nagdi died in 2019, and his legacy continues to be presented publicly: a solo exhibition at Picasso Art Gallery in Cairo opened in 2025, attesting to sustained interest in his work.
