Biography

Richard Serra (1938–2024) was an American sculptor, draftsman, printmaker, and filmmaker whose work fundamentally altered the terms on which large-scale art is experienced. Born in San Francisco, he earned a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1961 and an M.F.A. from Yale University in 1964, before relocating to New York in 1966. His practice became central to the development of Minimalism and Post-Minimalism, and he went on to define the field of site-specific installation across more than five decades of sustained production.

Serra's sculpture is inseparable from the physical encounter it demands. Working in steel — often weathering steel whose oxidized surface registers time and atmosphere — he constructed forms whose scale, curvature, and weight transform the spaces they inhabit and the bodies that move through them. Torqued Ellipse (1996–1997), held at Dia Beacon and other institutional collections, introduced a signature form in which double curvature generates genuine spatial disorientation, making the viewer's passage through the work an irreducible part of its meaning. The Matter of Time (1994–2005), a sequence of torqued ellipses and spirals installed at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, extends this logic across an entire gallery, producing a continuously shifting perceptual environment of exceptional ambition. Screech (1996), held at Tate, exemplifies how enclosure and curvature combine to make movement itself unstable, while 2-2-1: To Dickie and Tina (1969, realized 1994), also at Tate, connects his early structural investigations to the institutional recognition that followed.

Serra's exhibition history spans from a solo presentation at Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, in 1969 through decades of major shows at Gagosian in New York, London, and Paris — including Richard Serra: Transmitter at Gagosian Le Bourget in 2021, Richard Serra: Forged Rounds in New York in 2019, and Richard Serra: Rifts in London in 2018. Cristea Roberts Gallery, London, has long represented his prints, mounting the first UK exhibition devoted to that body of work in 2013. His prints have also been shown at Galerie Lelong in Paris and produced in collaboration with Gemini G.E.L. Following his death in 2024 on Long Island, New York, posthumous exhibitions have continued to affirm the breadth of his output: Richard Serra: The Final Works at Cristea Roberts Gallery ran from October 2024 into January 2025; Richard Serra: Running Arcs (For John Cage) opened at Gagosian, New York, in September 2025; and Richard Serra: Dernières estampes presented his final prints at Galerie Lelong, Paris, in late 2025. A further exhibition of his editions and printmaking at Gemini G.E.L. is scheduled for 2026–2027.
