Biography

Pablo Atchugarry was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on 23 August 1954, and began his artistic life as a painter before gravitating toward sculpture — a transition that would come to define his international reputation. He held his first solo exhibition in Montevideo in 1972, and in the years that followed he relocated to Italy, where he became deeply embedded in the marble-working traditions of Carrara. That immersion in the Carrara region proved formative: the material itself — its weight, translucency, and resistance — became the central language through which Atchugarry explores themes of light, hope, and spiritual ascent.

His sculptures range from intimate single forms to large-scale public and ceremonial works. Semilla de la esperanza, carved in Carrara marble and standing nearly four metres tall, has been permanently installed in the sculpture garden of the Uruguayan Government Building since 1996, its vertical thrust embodying the themes of growth and aspiration that recur throughout his practice. In 2002 — the year he also received the Michelangelo Prize — he completed Ideali, a monumental work in Garfagnana marble placed on Avenue Princesse Grace in Monte Carlo to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Prince Rainier's reign. The following year, Soñando la paz, an eight-part installation combining Carrara marble and Bardiglio della Garfagnana marble, was presented at the 50th Venice Biennale, extending his practice from the autonomous sculptural object toward expansive, multi-part spatial dialogue. The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome holds a donated white marble sculpture, Energy, in its collection, and presented a solo exhibition, Scolpire la Luce (Sculpting Light), in 2026.

Atchugarry's gallery relationships span several continents. Galleria d'Arte Contini in Venice has represented him in Italy since 2019, presenting solo exhibitions including The Movement of Light that year and The Time of Sculpture in 2024. Opera Gallery in Paris hosted a solo presentation in 2018, and Hollis Taggart in New York has mounted five documented solo exhibitions of his work. Pontone Gallery in London and Piero Atchugarry Gallery in Miami have also presented his sculpture at international fairs and exhibitions. Scholarly documentation of his output is anchored by a catalogue raisonné whose first volume, covering sculptures from 1971 to 2013, appeared in 2013, with subsequent volumes extending the record through 2018; the museum in Lecco maintains an archive, bibliography, and documentary holdings related to his work.
