Pablo Reinoso

Pablo Reinoso was born on 8 March 1955 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and began his formation as a sculptor at the age of thirteen under Argentine sculptor Jorge Michel. He went on to study architecture at the University of Buenos Aires before relocating to Paris in 1978, where he has lived and worked ever since. This dual grounding — in sculpture and in architecture — has shaped a practice that consistently interrogates the boundary between functional object and autonomous artwork, between built structure and organic form.

Reinoso is best known for his Spaghetti bench series, developed from the early 2000s onward, in which seating in wood or steel abandons its prescribed role and proliferates into looping, tendril-like extensions that colonize surrounding space. The works stage a quiet confrontation between order and growth, between the logic of design and the restlessness of living matter, and they have come to define his most recognizable contribution to contemporary sculpture and design. This tension — functional objects escaping their function — runs throughout his broader practice and has earned him a place in the collections of institutions including the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain (CNAP), the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, MALBA in Buenos Aires, the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo, GAMeC in Bergamo, MUSAC in León, and MACRO in Rosario, among others.

Reinoso's exhibition record spans major European and Latin American venues. A retrospective at the Château de Chambord in the Val de Loire in 2022 drew critical attention from Le Journal des Arts and Argentina's Clarín – Revista Ñ, while L'art absolument published a substantial essay on his sculptural practice that same year. His solo presentation Pablo Reinoso. La vida se mueve: entre el arte, el diseño y la artesanía at the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas in Madrid examined the intersections of art, design, and craft that animate his work. More recently, his practice has been featured at Centre Pompidou-Metz, Hangar Y in Meudon, and the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo in Badajoz, all in 2024. He is represented internationally by Carpenters Workshop Gallery in Paris, Barro Arte Contemporáneo in Buenos Aires, Waddington Custot in London, Baró Galeria in São Paulo and Madrid, Art Plural Gallery in Singapore, and Xippas Galleries in Paris and Geneva, among other galleries across Europe and the Americas.
