Francisco Zúñiga Chavarría

Francisco Zúñiga Chavarría — born José Jesús Francisco Zúñiga Chavarría on 27 December 1912 in Guadalupe, Barrio de San José, San José, Costa Rica — became one of the most significant figurative sculptors working in twentieth-century Latin America. In 1936 he relocated to Mexico City, a move that would define the remainder of his life and career. Working across sculpture, drawing, and printmaking, he remained based in Mexico until his death on 9 August 1998, developing a body of work rooted in the human figure and, above all, in the dignity and physical presence of indigenous women.

Zúñiga's reputation extended well beyond Mexico and his native Costa Rica during his lifetime. His work entered the permanent collections of some of the most prominent institutions in the Americas and Europe, among them the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, Harvard University Art Museums, the Phoenix Art Museum, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City, and the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico — a breadth of institutional presence that speaks to the sustained critical regard his work commanded across decades. In 1992 the Government of Mexico awarded him the Premio Nacional de Artes y Ciencias, the country's highest state recognition for artistic achievement. His exhibition history ranged across continents, with solo presentations at the Museo Nacional in San José in 1954, at Galería Enrique Guerrero in Mexico City in 2001, and at Jack Rutberg Fine Arts in Los Angeles in 2018, alongside gallery relationships in Paris, Hamburg, London, Stockholm, Amsterdam, and New York that reflected his international standing. His work has also entered distinguished private holdings, including the Eddie Basha Collection, known for its focus on Southwestern, Native American, and Latin American art.

The artist's estate is administered by the Fundación Zúñiga Laborde A.C. in Mexico, with Ariel Zúñiga serving as a central authenticating figure. The foundation maintains the official Francisco Zúñiga Catalogue Raisonné — a multi-volume scholarly record covering sculpture, oil paintings, prints, reproductions, and drawings across five volumes published between 1999 and 2006, with documentation ongoing and accessible at franciscozuniga.org. The foundation has worked actively to document the full extent of Zúñiga's output and to address the presence of forged works in the market. Primary representation of the estate is held by Jack Rutberg Fine Arts in Los Angeles, with secondary representation through Lincoln Glenn and RoGallery in New York, among others. In 2023, the Rollins Museum of Art in Winter Park included a Zúñiga work in its What's New? Recent Acquisitions exhibition, a reminder that his presence in institutional collections continues to be recognized and celebrated.
