Biography

Larry Poons was born on October 1, 1937, in Tokyo, Japan, and brought to the United States in 1938, where he grew up in New York. His early intellectual formation was shaped by an unusual dual immersion: he studied musical composition at the New England Conservatory of Music from 1955 to 1957 before turning to painting, which he pursued at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Art Students League of New York. That passage from music to visual art left a lasting imprint on his sensibility, and the structural logic of composition — rhythm, interval, tension — would remain a persistent undercurrent throughout his practice.

Poons first gained wide recognition in the 1960s as a painter of optically charged, rigorously organized canvases in which colored dots were distributed across fields of saturated hue with a precision that produced vivid perceptual effects. Tristan da Cugna (1964), a Liquitex-on-canvas work now held in the National Gallery of Art's Corcoran Collection in Washington, D.C., stands as a defining example of this period — its dot-and-color language placing Poons among the central figures of Op art's international moment. An Untitled color screenprint from 1967, also in the National Gallery of Art, marks the point at which his compositions began loosening from the grid, signaling a restless appetite for transformation that would define the decades ahead.

By the 1980s, Poons had moved decisively into a materially dense, physically active mode of abstraction. Works such as Seel (1981), an acrylic on canvas in the National Gallery of Art, and canvases including 01AS-3 (1981), 82G-10 (1982), and 84BS-2 (1984) reflect a practice built on energetic, irregular fields of paint — layered, tactile, and emphatically removed from the optical systems of his earlier career. His work from this period and beyond is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Poons's exhibition history spans decades and continents. He showed with Castelli Gallery in New York and Templon in Paris as early as 1976, and his work has continued to circulate widely. Loretta Howard Gallery in New York presented several significant exhibitions, including Larry Poons: Geometry and Dots in 2013, Choral Fantasy in 2015, and group presentations pairing his work with that of Jean Dubuffet in 2017 and Frank Stella in 2019. Roberto Polo Gallery mounted Larry Poons: The Twenty-First Century in Brussels in 2018, and Hillsboro Fine Art in Dublin included him in Surface and Light: John Gibbons and Larry Poons that same year. More recently, Almine Rech has presented solo exhibitions in London (2021) and Brussels (2023), with a Paris exhibition scheduled for 2026. Yares Art, his primary gallery, presented The Outerlands in New York in 2023 and One for Baby in 2024 — the latter reviewed in both The Brooklyn Rail and The Hudson Review — while Wetterling Gallery in Göteborg mounted Creations of Sound in 2025. Yares Art also featured Poons in the group exhibition Provocation, Iliad: Powers + Spells, running from April through August 2025.
