CONFIDENTIAL MARKETBiography
Liu Ye was born in Beijing in 1964 and continues to live and work there. His formation as an artist unfolded across two distinct cultural contexts: he studied industrial design at the School of Arts and Crafts in Beijing before turning to mural painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where he trained from 1986 to 1989. He then moved to Germany, completing an MFA at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin in 1994. In 1998, he spent six months at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, a residency that deepened his engagement with European art history and its visual traditions — an influence that would surface repeatedly in his subsequent work.
Liu Ye's paintings are marked by a deceptive quietness: flattened forms, restrained palettes, and figures — often solitary children, books, or geometric abstractions — that carry an atmosphere of concentrated interiority. His work has drawn sustained attention to the dialogue it conducts with Western modernism, a conversation made explicit in the exhibition Mondrian and Liu Ye, held at the Mondriaanhuis in Amersfoort in 2016, which placed his paintings in direct relation to the Dutch pioneer of abstraction. A major solo presentation, Storytelling, was mounted at Fondazione Prada in Milan in 2020, the same year David Zwirner presented Liu Ye: The Book and the Flower in New York. In 2023, David Zwirner's London gallery hosted Liu Ye: Naive and Sentimental Painting, a title that nods to Schiller's famous essay and signals the artist's ongoing interest in the charged space between simplicity and sophistication. Earlier solo exhibitions include a presentation at Johnen Galerie in Berlin in 2013. His work has also been featured in ArtReview and appeared in the context of the De Heus-Zomer Collection, shown at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 2014.
The scholarly record of Liu Ye's practice is anchored by Liu Ye: Catalogue Raisonné: 1991–2015, edited by Christoph Noe and published by Hatje Cantz in Ostfildern in 2015. The volume documents individual works with catalogue numbers and plate references; among the works it records is Hope No. 1, made in 2000 and catalogued as plate 00-02. Liu Ye is represented by David Zwirner across its New York, London, and Hong Kong spaces, with the New York relationship announced in 2019, and is also associated with Esther Schipper in Berlin.
