Biography

Wayne Thiebaud (November 15, 1920–December 25, 2021) was born in Mesa, Arizona, and raised in Long Beach, California, going on to become one of the most consequential American painters of the postwar era. His work in still life, landscape, and figurative subjects earned him a singular place in the history of American art, and his long tenure as a professor at the University of California, Davis — from 1960 until his retirement in 1990 — shaped generations of artists. The College Art Association recognized this dimension of his career with its Most Distinguished Studio Art Teacher of the Year award, a distinction that speaks to the seriousness with which Thiebaud approached both making and teaching.

At the center of Thiebaud's achievement is a body of paintings that transforms the most ordinary commercial objects — pastries, pies, canned goods, vending machines — into subjects of sustained pictorial attention. Pies, Pies, Pies (1961) and Two Paint Cans (1961) established the essential terms of his early style: frontal arrangement, serial repetition, and surfaces built up with a thick, almost sculptural impasto that insists on the physical fact of paint. By 1963, works such as Cakes, Display Cakes, and Three Machines had deepened this vocabulary, using theatrical shadows and vivid color to charge familiar objects with an uncanny stillness. Though Thiebaud was frequently discussed alongside Pop artists, his sensibility was always more materially emphatic and painterly than the cool detachment associated with that movement — his food is never merely graphic; it is luminous, tactile, and strange.

Thiebaud received the National Medal of Arts in 1994, presented during the Clinton administration, and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Art from the American Academy of Design, New York, in 2001. In 2010 he was inducted into the California Hall of Fame at the California Museum in Sacramento. His estate is represented by Acquavella Galleries in New York and Palm Beach, and his long association with Berggruen Gallery in San Francisco — spanning eight solo exhibitions since 1973, including a memorial exhibition in 2022 — reflects the deep roots his work has in the Bay Area. Paul Thiebaud Gallery, San Francisco, presented Selected Paintings and Works on Paper in 2025.

In the years following his death, Thiebaud's reputation has continued to grow internationally. Acquavella Galleries presented Wayne Thiebaud: Summer Days in New York in 2024, and in 2025 The Courtauld Gallery, London, mounted Wayne Thiebaud: American Still Life, his first solo exhibition at a UK museum institution — an event that drew substantial critical attention from publications including the Observer, Studio International, and Artlyst. A retrospective at the University of Southern California Art Galleries, Los Angeles, is scheduled for 2026, further consolidating the scope of his legacy across American institutional life.
