EXPANDING MARKETBiography
Yoshitomo Nara was born on December 5, 1959, in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. He completed his MFA at the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music in 1987, then relocated to Germany to study at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1988 to 1993. That extended period of formation in Europe, set against the backdrop of his Japanese upbringing, has long informed the distinctive visual language he developed — one that draws on childhood imagery, folk memory, and a quietly subversive emotional intensity.
Nara's exhibition history spans more than two decades of sustained institutional engagement. An early solo presentation, Don't Mind, If You Forget Me, was held at the Yokohama Museum of Art in 2000, and his profile has grown steadily since. A major retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2021 offered a comprehensive survey of his practice, followed by Yoshitomo Nara: Recent Work at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 2022, and Reach Out to the Moon, Even If We Can't at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth in 2023. More recently, I Draw the Line opened at Blum's Tokyo space in 2024, and My Imperfect Self was presented at Blum in Los Angeles in 2025. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the British Museum in London, and the Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul.
Nara is currently represented by Blum in Los Angeles, David Zwirner in New York, London, and Paris — a relationship announced in 2025 — and Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo. Pace Gallery in New York has served as a historic primary representative over more than fourteen years, with an ongoing relationship as of 2025. Looking ahead, his exhibition schedule remains active across multiple continents: a solo presentation titled Recent Sculptures runs at Château La Coste in Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, France, from April 2026 through January 2027; Fly to the Moon: Five Lunar Episodes is on view at Hara Museum ARC from September 2026 into January 2027; Sentinels of Stillness opens at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., in October 2026; and a solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is scheduled for fall 2027. A catalogue raisonné resource, Yoshitomo Nara: The Works, is accessible through the artist's official website, with a printed edition understood to cover works through 2010 across multiple volumes.
