EXPANDING MARKETBiography
Annie Morris, born in London in 1978, is a British artist whose practice moves fluidly across sculpture, painting, drawing, and tapestry. Based in London, she has developed a body of work that draws on personal experience and emotional life, translating interior states into forms that balance precariousness with quiet resilience. Her practice has attracted sustained critical attention, with features appearing in publications including the Financial Times, Apollo, and Studio International, the latter of which Morris used to reflect on the deeply autobiographical nature of her work.
Morris is perhaps best known for her Stack sculptures — vertical arrangements of irregular, vividly coloured forms that appear to defy gravity while suggesting both fragility and determination. Works such as Stack 3, Cadmium Red (2021) exemplify this vocabulary, in which accumulated shapes rise in seemingly unstable columns that nonetheless hold. The series has extended into bronze, as seen in Bronze Stack 3, Cobalt Turquoise (2023), demonstrating the enduring centrality of this format to her practice. Animal imagery also appears within her broader symbolic language, as in Two Owls (2020), pointing to a figurative sensibility that runs alongside her more abstract sculptural concerns.
Morris's exhibition history spans two decades and reaches across multiple continents. Early solo presentations in London — including The Man With The Dancing Eyes at Daniel Katz Gallery in 2004 and When A Happy Thing Falls at Allsopp Contemporary Gallery in 2007 — gave way to an increasingly international profile. She has presented solo exhibitions at Winston Wachter Fine Art in New York and Seattle, at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, at Château La Coste in Provence, and most recently Annie Morris: Hope From A Thin Line at the Fosun Foundation in Shanghai in 2024. Group exhibitions have brought her work to Mumbai, Tokyo, Valencia, Seoul, and Vijayanagar, among other cities. She is represented by Timothy Taylor in both London and New York, where she has shown regularly, including Permanent Moments in 2023. Her work is held in institutional collections including the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris and Shanghai, Kistefos Museet in Jevnaker, and the University of Colorado Art Museum in Boulder, as well as in private holdings such as the Longlati Foundation in Shanghai, the Pérez Collection in Miami, and the Ueshima Collection.
