ACTIVE MARKETBiography
Nate Lowman was born in 1979 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and grew up in Idyllwild, California, where his father directed a nonprofit art school. He studied at Idyllwild Arts Academy before earning a Bachelor of Science in Art from New York University in 2001, and he lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Lowman's practice centers on the transformation of familiar, often charged imagery drawn from American popular culture, media, and the visual residue of violence. Works such as Bikinicide #2 (2012), an oil and alkyd on canvas painting, and Bullethole (2012), executed in silkscreen and alkyd on canvas, demonstrate his sustained engagement with motifs that oscillate between graphic sign and painterly gesture — images of celebrity, bodily harm, and mass-mediated spectacle rendered through processes that flatten and repeat until meaning becomes both insistent and unstable. Both works are held in the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and additional work by Lowman is held by the Marciano Art Foundation.
Lowman's exhibition history spans two decades and multiple continents. An early solo presentation at Spellman Gallery in New York in 2005 preceded a long association with David Zwirner, which now represents him across its New York, London, Los Angeles, and Paris spaces. Solo exhibitions at David Zwirner's London gallery in 2019, New York in 2022, and Los Angeles in 2024 — the latter titled Parking — have traced the evolution of his visual language across different contexts. A solo presentation titled This Neighborhood's Changed opened at Gallery Common in Tokyo in 2025, and a further solo exhibition at David Zwirner New York is scheduled for 2026. His work has also been presented institutionally at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Centre Pompidou-Metz in Metz, and FRAC Champagne-Ardenne in Reims, and he participated in the group exhibition Penumbral at Galerie Sardine in Amagansett in 2025. Critical attention to his work has appeared in publications including Artillery Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail, Texte zur Kunst, and The New Order.
