Biography

Richard Learoyd was born in 1966 in Nelson, Lancashire, England, and graduated from the Glasgow School of Art with a degree in fine-art photography in 1990. He lives and works in London, where he has developed one of the most distinctive and technically singular practices in contemporary photography. His method centers on a room-sized camera obscura of his own construction, a device that functions as both studio and instrument, producing large-scale direct-positive photographs without a negative. The resulting images possess an unusual physical presence — dense, luminous, and irreducibly singular — that sets them apart from conventional photographic production.

Learoyd's subjects range from the human figure to botanical and animal matter, each rendered with an intensity that collapses the distance between object and image. Early works such as Squid Back, made in 2006, established his approach to studio-based figure work and demonstrated how the camera-obscura process could be redirected toward a contemporary photographic language. The paired portraits Agnes at Table 1 and Agnes at Table 2, both from 2007, exemplify his use of staged domestic tableaux and serial variation within tightly controlled spatial compositions. More recent work, including Poppies with Light Mirror from 2022, extends his vocabulary into still life, exploring reflective light and botanical subject matter with the same formal precision that defines his portraiture.

Learoyd is represented by Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco and Pace Gallery in New York, both of which have presented his work in sustained programs of solo exhibitions. At Fraenkel Gallery, solo presentations include Presences in 2011, The Outside World in 2013, and further solo exhibitions in 2017, 2018, and 2022. At Pace Gallery, solo shows have included Day for Night in New York in 2016, Curious in 2019, and Tropic of Cancer in Palm Beach in 2023. In 2022, Hamiltons Gallery in London presented a duo exhibition pairing his work with that of Irving Penn. In 2025, both galleries mounted new presentations simultaneously: A Loathing of Clocks and Mirrors at Pace Gallery in New York, and Richard Learoyd & Frances Palmer at Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Centre Pompidou, Tate, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Yale University Art Gallery.
